“From the stunning cakes, to the whimsical floral installations, to the gorgeous untraditional gowns and beyond — we were swept away with this styled wedding/elopement. My inspiration came from one of my favorite Disney classics, Sleeping Beauty, as well as the live action remakes of the Maleficent movies. I thought about how beautiful it would be to see what it may look like if ‘Aurora’ was getting married in an intimate, modern ceremony in 2020 (with Maleficent and her beau dropping in as well)! So many brides love the fairytale, whimsy concept in wedding design, and modern couples are embracing untraditional details in decor and style. This dreamy wedding had several inspirational design elements.
Our Charlotte, North Carolina venue, McColl Art Center, provided a unique, industrial background, mixed with its exposed brick. Located in uptown Charlotte, it was an operating church until the 1950’s when it caught fire and burned. It was soon restored and restructured, and to this day it serves as a center for artists to create innovative galleries to exhibit for the public. Not only is the venue a current art gallery, but they also hold weddings and receptions now!
We collaborated with an incredible group of vendors who made this magical event explode into life. Within the details, we wanted to incorporate soft pinks and blues alluding to the movie where Aurora’s dress changes colors. We even had our bride change into a second gown, fit for a reception with a blue floral pattern.
We brought nature inside in the prettiest way possible. I loved our elegantly unconventional sweetheart table. It’s an enchanting table complete with ‘ghost’ chairs and a ‘floating’ table top, fit for a romantic pair. Throughout all the details, you’ll find glistening butterfly ranunculus blossoms, pink roses galore, peach blossoms, dried stardust flowers, and vines — just to name a few! The wedding invitation suite combined our watercolor palette, and the main wording was etched on vellum paper – which has become a popular request for 2020-2021.
Our lovely gowns exuded ‘modern princess’ vibes with their low, sweetheart tops, bellowing balloon sleeves, and long flowing bottom halves that any bride would love to twirl in. Our main groom showcased two floral ties. Also I absolutely loved our jaw dropping, state of the art cakes that were way too pretty to eat. We had two different looks: an elegant pink, and a stormy blue. Both were full of intricate detail. There were layers of embroidered, textured artistry with edible, glittering touches. What we hope to see more of in the next coming years are couples stepping away from the more traditional looks by trying something new.
Speaking of something new, I must say that one of the neatest features was our ceremony aisle. A show stopping, life size scroll of the bride and groom’s names with a beloved song was written elegantly from top to bottom. This is a beautiful, trendy way for couples to express who they are in writing, literally. It can be utilized and displayed in many different ways. Anything from a special note, to vows, a favorite scripture, and more can be written and displayed.
One of the quotes from the beloved movie inspiration is, ‘They say if you dream a thing more than once, it’s sure to come true.’ This modern ‘Sleeping Beauty’ wedding was definitely a dream come true…”
